It's called faux finishing or faux painting and was popular about the turn of the last century (1900). WebI ended up reprinting the phone stand shown in the first picture because I had mistakenly oriented the wood grain texture perpendicular to the direction of the layer lines. While it still looked great unfinished, sanding and staining turned out terribly. So, I reprinted with the wood grain texture correctly oriented.
